A test site for a six Megawatt offshore wind turbine at Fife Energy Park has been approved by Ministers.

2B Energy has been given permission to test a novel single, two bladed wind turbine 20 metres off the coast, with the electricity generated being utilised locally.

Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said:  "Innovative companies deciding to test their new ideas in Scotland is further evidence of our reputation as a place to develop and deploy all forms of new green energy technologies. We are working to create the optimum conditions for low carbon investment to ensure we remain well-placed to become an international hub for low carbon expertise and a green energy powerhouse for Europe."

In April 2010, 2B Energy Ltd, submitted an application for consent to construct and operate a demonstration wind turbine at Methil in Fife 20 metres offshore with a generating capacity of six MW. Since the application was submitted, 2B Energy made a number of material changes to their proposals. Fife Council supported the application and no public representations were received.

Over £10 million has been invested in Fife Energy Park, a joint venture between Scottish Enterprise and Fife Council to roll out the development of renewables infrastructure.
