Over £600,000 for a flood alleviation scheme in Llanrwst

Natural Resources Minister, Alun Davies, has approved a Welsh Government grant of £604,000 for a flood alleviation scheme in Llanrwst.

Work on the scheme will begin this year and, once completed, will reduce the risk of flooding for 42 homes and businesses in Cae Person and Maes Tawel – two estates that have suffered from repeated flooding in recent years.

This recurrent flooding is due to a watercourse which drains the steep catchment above the houses and overwhelms the existing watercourse as it passes through the flatter land at the Cae Person estate.  It is estimated that the long term cost of this continued flooding would be over £5 million.

To help prevent further flooding, Conwy County Borough Council has developed a plan to increase the capacity of the existing watercourse by raising flood walls, realigning and increasing the size of culvert inlets and replacing trash screens. Other options include the construction of embankments above the housing estate with a controlled outlet to the downstream watercourse to retain and manage flood flows.

Announcing this new funding, Alun Davies said:

“I am pleased to announce this funding which will allow work to start this year on this important project that will protect people’s homes and businesses from the devastating impact of flooding.

“The Welsh Government is committed to reducing the risk and consequences of flooding for communities and businesses right across Wales.

“One in six properties in Wales is at risk of flooding and I recognise that as the climate changes and sea levels rise, flood and coastal erosion risk is set to increase. We are working to address this and are investing more than £180 million in flood and coastal erosion management over the life of this Assembly.”

Conwy Councillor Mike Priestley, who is Cabinet Member for Highways, Environment and Sustainability, said:

“We’re very pleased that the Welsh Government has funded this work which will help protect 42 properties vulnerable to flooding in Cae Person and Maes Tawel in Llanrwst.

“Flooding can be a devastating experience for residents when it affects their homes and this work is one of the schemes that Conwy County Borough Council is delivering to help prevent flooding in the County."
