Play time for Welsh kids with £1.25 million of new funding

A new funding package of more than a million pounds to develop play opportunities for children across Wales has been announced by the Welsh Government yesterday.

Councils will be able to use the £1.25 million for a number of measures, including improving play areas with equipment such as rope swings and timber frame structures. It will also help buy portable play equipment for children living in disadvantaged communities, improve access for disabled children to take part in play opportunities, improve lighting in play areas and encourage street play.

Announcing the funding, Deputy Minister for Tackling Poverty Vaughan Gething said:

“Enabling children to play in a secure enjoyable place should not be seen as a luxury. Play is a vital part of a child’s upbringing and development. This new funding will help local authorities across Wales to improve and develop facilities with the aim of providing more opportunities for children in their area to play.

“Despite the squeeze on our budgets, we are determined to continue to support play opportunities. We are committed to doing what we can to improve the standard of life in communities and help our children to live healthy lives.”

Wales was the first country in the UK to adopt the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Article 31 of the charter says children have the right to relax and play. Play is an important part of children’s lives, benefiting their health, happiness, well being and laying the foundations for reaching their full potential as adults.
