Scottish Civil Justice Council

The creation of a Scottish Civil Justice Council is the focus of a Scottish Government consultation launched yesterday.
The consultation outlines proposals to replace the existing civil rules councils with a single council, which will have a wider policy role to advise and make recommendations on improving the civil justice system in Scotland.
The Council was suggested by Lord Gill's wide-ranging Scottish Civil Courts Review and will be responsible for implementing the rules changes necessary to implement the review's comprehensive proposals for change.
Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said:
"The findings of Lord Gill and the members of his project board represent a landmark in the development of Scottish civil justice by identifying priorities for reform that will address inefficiencies in Scotland's civil courts. Establishing the Council will provide a range of benefits for our justice system and economy and the launch of this consultation today marks an important step towards implementation of civil court reform.
"I would encourage those with an interest in the work of Scotland's civil courts to make their voices heard by responding to the issues raised through this consultation."
The findings of the consultation will inform legislation, which it is intended will be introduced to Parliament next year.
The consultation closes on December 22, 2011.
