Scotland’s Chief Statistician yesterday published the Scottish Shellfish Farm Production Survey 2012. The publication details statistics on the employment, production and value of shellfish from Scottish Shellfish Farms. It is structured to follow industry trends within the mussel, Pacific oyster, native oyster, queen scallop and scallop species sectors. Some statistics are given for the 10-year period 2003-2012.
The main findings are;
- Production tonnage of mussels fell by 10 per cent from 6,996 tonnes in 2011 to 6,277 tonnes in 2012. This is due to the variation in spat fall in time and place in recent years
- Production of Pacific oysters decreased by 14 per cent from the 2011 total. Although Pacific oyster production for on-growing has significantly increased (128 per cent) from 1,400,000 shells in 2011 to 3,190,000 shells in 2012
- Employment levels increased by 4 per cent to 358 people from the 2011 total of 343, showing a continued confidence in the industry
- Overall estimated value of the industry decreased to £8.7 million in 2012 from the 2011 total of £9.8 million
