Stress – Line Manager Competency Indicator Tool
20 Apr 2010 02:14 PM
Line managers play a vital role in the identification and management of stress within the organisation.
They are likely to see the problems causing the stress first hand, will be in the best position to notice changes in staff behaviour that may indicate a stress-related problem and will often be the first point of contact when an individual feels stressed.
It is essential that line managers are equipped with the correct skills and behaviours to be able to manage these situations.
The HSE, in association with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and Investors in People, has designed a tool to allow managers to assess whether they currently have the behaviours identified as effective for preventing and reducing stress at work; its aim is to help managers reflect on their behaviour and management style.
Please note - the Excel version of this Tool was developed and tested using Office 2000 and 2007. We cannot guarantee that it will function correctly under any other setup. The Tool works best if it is saved to your hard drive rather than being opened from the webpage. You will need to enable the macros. If you are having problems using the Excel version, contact your IT provider or use the PDF version below.
The HSE, with colleagues from CIPD and IiP, is currently developing a suite of tools for both line-managers and those who train and support them in that role.
Part of this development will include testing them with potential users. You can get involved in developing and refining these tools. To find out how:
