30 May 2012 12:40 PM

What is Talking Science?

Talking Science is a series of popular science lectures that take place around STFC sites across the country. They offer a chance to hear about and discuss some of the hottest areas of science with some of the leading experts. You don't need to be an expert or even a scientist to come, they're aimed at everyone.

When is it happening?

Thursday 21st June 2012 - 6.00pm

'Hollywood meets science'
Dr Hugh Mortimer - STFC RAL Space

Science plays a huge role in Hollywood films. It can be the premise with which a whole movie is based upon; it can provide flavour, colour and depth to a scene; or it can be used to support a stunning special effect. However even the name, "Science Fiction", speaks volumes about the film genre where the director has the difficult task of merging what science says is physically plausible with the dramatic content of a fictional script. This talk will describe what's really involved in providing scientific advice to a Hollywood blockbuster, as well as using film clips to illustrate how science can be used in films to add value, and why sometimes film directors get it so wrong.

Where are the talks held?

The talk will be held at STFC Headquarters, Polaris House Swindon. View a map of how to get to Polaris House (link opens in a new window).
