Tax avoidance measures fall 'shamefully' short

6 Dec 2010 03:31 PM

In response to measures to tackle tax avoidance announced by exchequer secretary to the Treasury David Gauke today, PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said:

“If the minister was, as he claims, ‘fully committed to tackling tax avoidance’ he wouldn’t be talking about just another £2 billion over four years, he would be targeting 10 times that amount every year.

“The truth is, this government shamefully has very little interest in challenging wealthy individuals and big businesses who deprive our economy of tens of billions of pounds by dodging paying taxes they owe.

“The well-organised and well-attended protests at the weekend showed just how angry people are that money that should be invested in public services, as the alternative to spending cuts, is effectively being stolen from us with impunity."
