MARITIME AND
COASTGUARD AGENCY News Release (Duty 2) issued by The Government
News Network on 5 May 2008
Ten people have
been airlifted from a speedboat which went aground this afternoon
on Lavan Sands, near Beaumaris.
Holyhead Coastguard was contacted by VHF radio by the 23 foot
speedboat Monterey 2 with 9 adults and three children aboard. The
boat had gone aground on the Lavan Sands at low water and
conditions worsened with in poor visibility due to mist.
Holyhead Coastguard requested the launch of the Beaumaris RNLI
inshore lifeboat which was unable to reach the stranded vessel due
to the low tide. Rescue Helicopter 122 from RAF Valley were
diverted to this incident and airlifted 10 people off the boat
with two adults remaining on board to attempt refloating at high
water this evening.
The people were taken to shore at Beaumaris and met by the Penmon
Coastguard Rescue Team.
Holyhead Coastguard Watch Manager said,
"Anyone putting to sea should check the weather and tide
conditions before going out. This information can be obtained by
mariners from the Coastguard."
