Hi

The National Archives launches new library catalogue

1 Aug 2011 11:42 AM

The National Archives has replaced its library catalogue of published works with a new open-source system called Koha.

Koha, named after a Maori custom that can be translated as gift or donation, is software that is freely available for download from the internet. The system is being supported by PTFS Europe, and will provide both cost and time savings for The National Archives.

New features

The new, entirely web-based system uses the data transferred from the previous library catalogue and is consistent with the look and feel of our website.

While the standard search function remains, there are also a number of new features that will benefit users, including an RSS feed to a monthly new books lists, images of book covers pulled through from Google Books, and access to bibliographies on specialist subjects created by records specialists at The National Archives.

Using the system

Our reference library holds a collection of books and periodicals that relate to the documents held within the archives and cover many aspects of history.

The Library Team will be on hand to help visitors to The National Archives to use the new online catalogue. Find out more at the next User Forum on Wednesday 3 August at 12:30pm.

We welcome your feedback on the new library catalogue - please take part in our user survey, available on the home page of the new catalogue.
