14 Nov 2012 03:43 PM
The Institute of Education has acquired the educational publisher Trentham Books Limited, recently (13 November, 2012).
Trentham was founded three decades ago by Dr Gillian Klein and the late Professor John Eggleston. It is renowned in the UK and internationally in the publishing sector and within education studies for its underpinning values of equality, inclusion and social justice and has a focus on both the academic and the professional markets.
In 2010 Trentham Books won the annual Diversity Award of the Independent Publisher's Guild (IPG) for "helping educational professionals to promote social inclusion and multiculturalism, and its dedication to diversity and equality over 26 years". Known for its pioneering spirit, Trentham was the first publisher to produce a book on bullying in schools among other innovations.
Dr Klein will join the IOE and continue as the publisher of Trentham, which will become an imprint of IOE Press.
Within IOE Press, Trentham Books will continue its current publishing profile including three journals: International Journal of Development Education and Global Learning; Race Equality Teaching and International Journal on School Disaffection.
IOE Director, Professor Chris Husbands, said: "We are very excited about this acquisition which strengthens the IOE's position as a publisher in leading-edge academic research and professional practice from within and without the IOE. Trentham has a highly distinctive approach, and there are strong synergies with the IOE's work. Trentham will help the IOE to engage and exchange knowledge with our academic and practitioner communities in the UK and internationally".
Trentham's portfolio already includes a number of IOE academics as authors, including Iram Siraj-Blatchford, professor of early childhood and primary education; Professor Hugh Starkey, a specialist in citizenship education; Dr Doug Bourn, director of the Development Education Research Centre and the literacy expert Emerita Professor Margaret Meek.
Gillian Klein said: "The IOE is the perfect home for Trentham Books and its portfolio of splendid academic authors. And as one of the first Research Fellows in the IOE's then Centre for Multicultural Education, I look forward to returning to the Institute in an exciting new role and to working with the team at IOE Press to develop new publications that will enrich the education of children and young people".
