Websites trading in stolen bank data targeted

21 Feb 2013 02:03 PM

Thousands of members of websites dedicated to online crime have been targeted by an ongoing SOCA-led operation. The websites targeted have been shown to be solely concerned with online criminality, including the trading or criminal use of stolen bank card data and sensitive personal information.

To help prevent progression into serious criminality, SOCA has contacted individuals who have expressed an interest in carding and other sites, either by direct email messaging or a personal visit to addresses throughout the UK.

In partnership with the Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit and other UK police forces, SOCA continues to coordinate arrests of persons who are suspected of direct involvement in bank card fraud.  This is part of a wider strategy to disrupt those engaged in online crime.

SOCA continues to work with international counterparts to promote law enforcement operations, and with private sector partners including UK banks and Internet Service Providers to share information on compromised data and prevent fraud.

Retailers ultimately pay the cost of fraudulent card transactions, meaning this type of criminality has a prolonged impact on the economy. Individuals frequently suffer as the trade in illegally-acquired personal information is a major factor in identity theft.

Other criminal websites, and those who engage with them, remain subject to scrutiny from law enforcement bodies in the in the UK and throughout the world.

If you have information relating to this type of crime you can submit a report to Action Fraud or report anonymously to the Crimestoppers website or by calling 0800 555 111.
