The Welsh Government is issuing a final call for applications from providers of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) activities for its National Science Academy Grant Scheme (NSAGS).
The NSAGS, which provides financial support for activities that engage and enrich STEM in Wales, is inviting applications for its autumn grant round from STEM activity providers including further and higher education institutions, training providers, careers companies, STEM societies and UK professional bodies.
Last year’s funding round enabled 21 projects to get off the ground, including a one-day ‘TeenTech’ event at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium, which saw more than 140 scientists, engineers and technologists work alongside hundreds of students.
The event saw participants take part in hands-on activities and challenges to learn about technology, including how to build a mobile application and how to protect planes from lightning strikes.
Another project to benefit from the NSAGS was an Easter revision school hosted by Bangor University, which was attended by 300 young people who gathered for practical workshops and team challenges aimed at raising their attainment in science.
Previous projects have also included presentations, site visits, festivals, roadshows, competitions and exhibitions. The deadline for entries for the autumn round is July 31st
Economy Minister, Edwina Hart, said:
“Enthusing and inspiring the next generation of innovators, scientists, engineers and technologists will be key to future job and wealth-creation in Wales.
“The challenge is ensuring young people are given every opportunity to participate in activities that nurture an enthusiasm in STEM subjects. The National Science Academy Grant Scheme is an ideal vehicle through which STEM interest-groups and activity-providers can put forward their ideas for creative projects that add real value to the STEM sector in Wales.”
