Gallus grammar advice has been created for Scots speakers’ through additional Scottish Government funding for the language.

Minister for Scotland’s Languages Alasdair Allan welcomed the publication of Modren Scots Grammar: Wirkin wi Wirds to mark the tenth anniversary of the Scottish Language Dictionaries (SLD).

The new book, a partnership with publisher Luath, received £10,000 while £18,500 investment was made in the online Dictionary of the Scots Language.

Minister for Scotland’s Languages Alasdair Allan said:

“Scots is all around us, in our communities, in our songs, theatre, literature and poetry. The Scottish Language Dictionaries plays a vital role in helping people expand their knowledge of the language.

“Both the online dictionary and Wirkin wi Wirds will help more and more people move beyond popular words like glaikit, blether, braw and dreich – the most popular words in a survey last month – to draw on more of our incredibly rich language.”

The Dictionary of the Scots Language brings together all 22 volumes of the Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue and the Scottish National Dictionary, providing insights into the history of Scots and the English language.

Scottish Language Dictionaries, funded by the Scottish Government, is the principal research organisation for the Scots Language.  It undertakes a wide range of work in Scottish schools, supporting teachers and working with people of all ages and abilities through community groups.

The Scottish Government funding will support the Dictionary of the Scottish Language to update its IT systems to simplify editing and make it more accessible

A You Gov poll in January showed the most popular Scots words were driech, glaikit, blether, crabbit, sleekit, beastie and braw.
