Renowned academic, activist and the founder of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT's BCSWomen group Dr Sue Black has been honoured in the new year's Honours List for 2016.

In addition to her work in campaigning for increased visibility for women in tech, Sue Black OBE has been very involved with BCS over the years - including serving on BCS Council. She was the first person to be awarded the BCS John Ivinson medal for outstanding services to the BCS and has also been invited twice to speak at the UN on women’s rights. Her activities have also had two references in Hansard.

Dr Black OBE has been a Trustee of the Bletchley Park Museum and recently published ‘Saving Bletchley Park’ which looks at the vital work done at Bletchley Park and the story of how this venerable institution has staved off disaster a number of times.

The book well reflects Dr Black’s enthusiasm - it’s a story about technology, and how it can be employed to extraordinary effect. But is also a story of how twenty first century technology - in this case a huge social media campaign - helped save the birthplace of the modern computer 70 years later. In keeping with Dr Black’s innovative approach it was a social media campaign that funded the book itself - a fitting testament to the achievements of the remarkable computing pioneers at Bletchley and Dr Black’s efforts.
