BCS conference to ask: 'Is AI an existential threat to humanity?'

AI-2015 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence

Is AI an existential threat to humanity? If so, in what way and what can be done about it? This will be the focus of a panel debate at a forthcoming international conference on artificial intelligence (AI-2015). The annual conference is organised by the AI specialist group (SGAI), part of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.

Professor Max Bramer, Chair of the BCS SGAI says: “Artificial intelligence is one of the most exciting topics of our times and has the potential to dramatically affect every aspect of our society. Our conference is a unique opportunity for the international artificial intelligence community to come together and discuss these important issues and share their ideas with research staff working at the leading edge of artificial intelligence from across the globe.”

The conference, now in its 35th year, will also include a keynote speech from Professor Lars Nolle (JADE University of Applied Sciences, Germany) who will explore the different interpretations of the term AI before discussing potential dangers and threats presented by it.

Professor Steffen Staab (University of Southampton) will give a keynote session on the final day discussing how the web reflects the connections and biases we experience in our life and how modelling them helps us to better understand the observations we can make on the web.

AI-2015 is the leading series of the UK - based international conferences on artificial intelligence and the longest running AI conference series in Europe. The event has parallel technical and application streams. It will review recent technical advances in artificial intelligence technologies and show how this leading edge technology has been applied to solve business problems.
