Big Lottery Fund responds to Triennial Review recommendations

The Big Lottery Fund welcomes the publication of the Cabinet Office’s Triennial Review which concludes the Fund is highly respected and ‘a valued organisation with an important role to play with the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise sector as well as with the public sector partners and business stakeholders’1

Peter Ainsworth, the Fund’s Chair said: “I am confident that we are making good progress towards growing and developing the Fund’s vision in accordance with many of the recommendations made in the review. I will now be discussing with the Board the areas of our work and operations that we can further enhance to ensure the best possible service for our customers and stakeholders.”

Dawn Austwick, Chief Executive of the Big Lottery Fund said: “I am pleased that the Review has recognised the importance of the Big Lottery Fund to the voluntary and community sector and the communities and people most in need who we exist to support. This review is timely and will help complement our work on our Strategic Framework for 2015 to 2021 and inform our future planning.”

  • The Triennial Review has been conducted in accordance with the requirement for all Government Departments to review their Non Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs) at least once every three years.
  • The Triennial Reviews of NDPBs examine whether there is a continuing need for the functions performed by the Big Lottery Fund (the Fund), as well as the structure, efficiency, and effectiveness of the organisation. In order to make a full assessment, the review took into account the views of people who have an involvement with or interest in the Fund as a grant making organisation.
  • Organisations have until July 2014 to get involved with the future of Big Lottery funding through Your Voice Our Vision at www.yourvoiceourvision.org.uk
  • The Big Lottery Fund is responsible for giving out 40% of the money raised for good causes by the National Lottery.
  • The Fund is committed to bringing real improvements to communities and the lives of people most in need and has been rolling out grants to health, education, environment and charitable causes across the UK. Since its inception in 2004 BIG has awarded close to £6bn.
  • The Fund was formally established by Parliament on 1 December 2006.
  • In the year ending 31 March 2013, 28% of total National Lottery revenue was returned to the Good Causes.
  • Since the National Lottery began in 1994, £31 billion has been raised and more than 400,000 grants awarded across arts, sport, heritage, charities, health, education and the environment.
