Civil Liberties Committee MEPs negotiating both the EU Passenger Name Record (PNR) proposal, on the use of air passengers' data to fight terrorism, and the EU data protection reform (regulation and directive) in three-way “trilogue” talks with the Council and Commission will brief the committee on their progress today from 17.10 to 18.10. Parliament aims to reach a deal on these files by the end of 2015.

First, the committee will hear Jan Philipp Albrecht (Greens/EFA, DE), rapporteur on the general data protection regulation covering the bulk of personal data processing in the EU, and Marju Lauristin (S&D, ET), rapporteur on the directive on processing data to prevent, investigate, detect or prosecute criminal offences or enforce criminal penalties, from 17.10 to 17.40.

Next, Timothy Kirkhope (ECR, UK), rapporteur on the EU PNR proposal, which would oblige airlines to hand their passengers’ data to EU countries in order to help the authorities to fight terrorism and serious transnational crime, will brief MEPs on the progress of negotiations with the Council and Commission from 17.40 to 18.10.
