Making inroads in innovation for Europe

A first for Europe! On 13 March people in the streets of Amsterdam found themselves face to face with the car of the future, as a self-driving Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion made its way around the capital.

In the course of the day, the innovative concept car attracted attention in many parts of the city. Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment Melanie Schultz van Haegen certainly wasn’t the only person to have their photo taken with the vehicle!

Run-up to 14 April

The event was part of the run-up to the informal meeting of EU transport ministers on 14 April. One of the main subjects to be addressed will be self-driving vehicles that can communicate with one another and with traffic control centres.

In the truck platooning challenge starting in late March, lorries from various European countries will drive to Rotterdam in platoons. What’s more, European car manufacturers will send their self-driving vehicles to Amsterdam to take the ministers to the meeting.

Greener and smarter transport

Ms Schultz van Haegen has put greener and smarter transport on the agenda. Developments are happening at a rapid pace, raising many questions about liability, cybersecurity, data, privacy and infrastructure. Since transport is often a cross-border affair, a much greater level of European cooperation is required.

On the same day as the EU transport ministers’ meeting, Amsterdam’s EYE Film Museum will host the Innovation Expo.
