Holocaust Memorial Day 2009

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust has announced that its local organisers' pack for community groups and specialised materials for trade unions to promote Holocaust Memorial Day 2009, are now ready for distribution.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2009 is 'Stand up to Hatred' and urges all of us to look at our behaviour towards others and understand how acts of hatred, however small, can occur in Britain today.

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on 27 January each year and teaches the lessons of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in order to build a better future; it is about standing up to hatred, and replacing it with respect and understanding.

The pack, which is free of charge, contains full details of the theme for 2009 as well as advice on running an event in the local community with practical tips and how the trust can help.

Other materials include posters looking at aspects of the theme and covering a number of issues, including propaganda materials and laws used by the Nazi and Cambodian governments to attack and dehumanise groups of people.

There are also postcards looking at stories of individuals who have been victims of hatred, stood up to hatred, or both are also available along with further specialised
materials for trade unions, which include ideas for local branch events.

Carly Whyborn, national co-ordinator of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, said:

we encourage people across the UK to 'stand up to hatred', and learn the lessons of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides

"This year's event looks set to be the biggest for Holocaust Memorial Day Trust yet, as we encourage people across the UK to 'stand up to hatred', and learn the lessons of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides to build a better future.

"We are excited to see all the ways the new resources will be used by community groups, trade unions and prisons throughout the country. By joining together for Holocaust Memorial Day 2009, we can explore how each of us can take action to help make our communities stronger and safer."
