Communicating the science of food allergy

Communicating the science of food allergy is notoriously difficult. Have you something to say about simplifying uncertainty in science? Would you like to listen to cutting-edge thinking on how best to convey developing ideas to the public?

The Food Standards Agency, in partnership with the Anaphylaxis Campaign, will be holding a conference on ‘Communicating the science of food allergy’ in London on 14 March 2011. Places will be available for a cross-section of people with an interest in food allergy.

Professor Ian Kimber, from Manchester University, and Professor Gideon Lack, from Kings College London, will be discussing areas of uncertainty related to food allergy, including the best time to introduce potentially allergenic food into children’s diets and how different routes of exposure might affect the development of a sensitivity to a food.

Their presentations will be followed by a panel discussion on ‘the difficulty of communicating advice to the public where the science is uncertain or knowledge is developing’.

The conference runs from 9.30am to 1pm on Monday 14 March 2011 at the Royal Society of Chemistry, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1J 0BA. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. The event is free to attend, although everyone will have to register in advance.
