Miscarriage possibly linked to family history of heart disease, says study

Researchers have found that women who have multiple miscarriages before their first child is born are more likely to have parents who suffer from heart disease.

The study suggests miscarriage and heart disease may be affected by the same genes and that this should be investigated further.

Our senior cardiac nurse, Amy Thompson, said: “This study highlights the possible links between a family history of heart disease and miscarriage by suggesting there is a higher incidence of heart disease in the parents of women who have had several miscarriages.

“Multiple miscarriages are rare and while this is an interesting finding, there is no proven explanation for the link and no firm conclusions can be made.

“There are a number of factors which come into play for both miscarriage and heart disease.”

The research is published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
