Class size regulations

A consultation on regulations to set a legal limit of 25 for primary one class sizes will be published on Friday March 19, 2010.

Giving evidence to the Parliament's Education Committee today, Education Secretary Michael Russell confirmed he will publish the consultation paper within the next fortnight. He has now confirmed this will happen next Friday.

Mr Russell said:

"My focus is on making sure that Scottish school pupils get the best possible education. I believe that lower class sizes, particularly in the all important early years of primary, can play a vital part in making sure this happens.

"We know that good progress has been made in many areas and local authorities are keen to see a new limit in place for class sizes in primary one to give them legal backing in their drive to reduce class sizes even further.

"I am pleased to confirm the Scottish Government will launch our consultation paper on this next Friday. I hope all those with an interest, and councils in particular, will respond to this consultation."

Mr Russell was giving evidence to the Scottish Parliament's Education Committee on class sizes this morning.

The Consultation will be published on Friday March 19, 2010 and will run for 12 weeks.
