£1.8m to improve dialysis services in North West Wales

Renal dialysis services in North West Wales are to receive a funding boost of £1.8m over the next two years Health Minister Mark Drakeford announced today.

The funding will go towards the refurbishment and improvement of the Elidir Unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd and the establishment of a permanent subsidiary unit at Ysbyty Alltwen, Tremadog.

The refurbished unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd will provide an improved clinical, patient and staff environment, including an extended dialysis area with fifteen dialysis stations and one isolation area, training room, treatment room, dedicated staff facilities and a much improved waiting area.

The subsidiary service at Ysbyty Alltwen will have nine dialysis stations, with six in an open plan area and three further stations in a separate area.  In addition the unit will have its own entrance and drop off area.  There is currently a dialysis service at Ysbyty Alltwen provided on a temporary basis.

The Health Minister said:

“The permanent unit at Alltwen and the refurbished and extended service at Ysbyty Gwynedd will improve renal dialysis in the North West Wales area.  It will benefit both patients and staff and also help to reduce travel times for those renal patients from Meirionnydd and Dwyfor who are suitable candidates for the unit in Alltwen.  It will also help to relieve pressure on the main dialysis unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd.”

Work on the new unit is expected to begin in February this year with completion in February 2015.
