Expert Initial Teacher Training Adviser for Wales appointed by Minister

Professor John Furlong has yesterday been appointed Wales’ expert Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Adviser by Education Minister Huw Lewis.

The appointment of an ITT Adviser is a key recommendation from Professor Ralph Tabberer’s Review of ITT in Wales which was published last year.

John Furlong has been appointed to work with the ITT sector to raise the standard, quality and consistency of teaching training and assessment in ITT across Wales.

Huw Lewis said:

"If we are to improve the educational attainment of children and young people in Wales we must train our teachers to the highest standards

"I am extremely pleased that John Furlong has accepted this important position. I know that he will take forward this role with a clear focus and a drive for improvement and excellence in teacher training and education.

"I have every confidence that he can work with the ITT Sector in Wales to deliver the improvement needed. He will be crucial in building that essential link between policy makers and the sector, sharing good practice, drawing senior leaders together to share a common goal, a common understanding of what needs to be done to raise and maintain standards."
