News Release issued by the COI News Distribution Service on 05 March 2010

Val Davison, has been appointed Head of the National Healthcare Science School of Genetics, Chief Scientific Officer Professor Sue Hill announced today.

The appointment has been made following a national recruitment process led by Sue Hill and the Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC) programme.

Hosted by NHS West Midlands Strategic Health Authority, the National Healthcare Science School of Genetics has been developed to support the delivery of the new training programme for Healthcare Science Practitioners and Healthcare Scientist trainees.

Val Davison is Director of the West Midlands Regional Genetics Service at Birmingham Women’s NHS Foundation Trust, winner of last year’s Chief Scientific Officer’s Award for Leadership and will continue as the Department of Health’s MSC Professional Advisor for Genetics.

Chief Scientific Officer Professor Sue Hill said,

“I would like to congratulate Val on her successful appointment and look forward to working with her in the future.

“This is an important role in the implementation of the Modernising Scientific Careers Programme and Val brings with her a wealth of experience in the field of clinical genetics, as well as in educating and training the workforce.

“She has been instrumental in the development of the modernised curriculum in Genetics and is the ideal person to take on the challenge of delivering a new training programme for this specialty.”

Val Davison said,

“I am delighted and excited to be heading the National Healthcare Science School of Genetics. In the last 40 years, genetics has changed dramatically, most famously in 2000 when the first draft of the human genome was developed.

“I’ve seen the new developments at first hand and have been able to introduce the new genetic testing regimes. I am looking forward to taking on the challenge of delivering the new training programme and being part of the development of our future Healthcare Practitioners and Healthcare Science Trainees.”
