E-asy access to teaching assessment tools

Intrallect, a Linlithgow-based software design company, has won the contract to develop Scotland's National Assessment Resource, Minister for Schools and Skills Keith Brown announced today on a visit to the company.

Currently Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) and the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) operate a number of manual and online assessment systems, to allow teachers to judge the knowledge and understanding of young learners.

The National Assessment Resource will provide the education profession with a single online assessment system. It will act as a store of assessment resources, a tool for the development of new resources, and a coherent infrastructure for assessment within Curriculum for Excellence.

Mr Brown said:

"Good assessment is integral to the rich educational experience we want for all our children and young people; ensuring parents, pupils and teachers get the feedback they need to make the right choices about learning.

"That is why we are working to develop a coherent system of assessment which values the learning and skills every young person will need in the modern world.

"The National Assessment Resource is an important part of the infrastructure to support Curriculum for Excellence. By ensuring the values, purposes and principles of Curriculum for Excellence are embedded in our assessment framework we can help children to achieve their potential.

"Today I am delighted to award Intrallect the opportunity to help equip Scotland's teachers with the tools they need to develop the skills and knowledge to help all our young people to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. Theirs will be a vital contribution to the biggest reform of Scotland's education system in a generation."

Intrallect Chief Executive Charles Duncan said:

"We are delighted to be working with Learning and Teaching Scotland and the Scottish Qualifications Authority to provide a world class skills assessment solution for all teachers in Scotland."

LTS Chief Executive Bernard McLeary said:

"Learning and Teaching Scotland is delighted to be working with our partners to deliver this innovative assessment project that, in conjunction with Glow, is an exciting tool for the future development of education and will further support the aspirations of Curriculum for Excellence.

"Technology drives innovation and change and by constantly evolving our resources we can ensure the delivery of a world class education system for a modern Scotland."

SQA Chief Executive Dr Janet Brown said:

"This is an exciting development in the delivery of Curriculum for Excellence, which SQA welcomes. The National Assessment Resource is a great example of partnership working between SQA and LTS. This unique system will deliver real benefits to the way teachers and lecturers delivering Curriculum for Excellence use, create and store assessment materials."

Intrallect was formed in June 2000 as a spin-out from the University of Edinburgh. It is a subsidiary of Leading Software, a Scottish based Software Group. Intrallect will work in partnership with MyKnowledgeMap, a leading UK technology company.

The development of the resource represents a new partnership between Scottish Government, Intrallect, Learning and Teaching Scotland and the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

The Scottish Government has provided £1.7 million over five years to a partnership between LTS and SQA to manage the development of this resource. The initial phase of the development is expected to be completed by autumn 2010.
