Minister issues invitation to farmers

The Minister for Natural Resources and Food, Alun Davies, is holding a number of meetings across Wales to explain his thinking on CAP and the action farmers will need to consider in order for their businesses thrive against a background of reducing direct subsidy payments.

Alun Davies said:

“Over the past few months I have made a number of decisions and published proposals that are crucial to the future success of Welsh farming.

“I am keen to talk face-to-face to farmers and explain my vision and my approach to helping them deliver profitable, sustainable and professionally managed farms across Wales.

"The industry must see the cuts in the EU CAP budget as a wake-up call and proof that we must move away from the current over dependence on direct subsidy support. In the future that support will simply not be there at the same levels and I cannot and will not stand by and watch large parts of the industry slip into decline and failure as the subsidy levels fall.

“I want to listen to farmers and hear their concerns but I also want to explain my belief that by working together and by embracing change we can put our industry and individual farm businesses on the best possible footing for the future.”

In January the Minister set out CAP Pillar One policy for the period between 2014 and 2020.

The Welsh Government is currently consulting on plans for the next Rural Development Programme that will see nearly £1bn of funding being spent to strengthen Welsh farm businesses, tackle poverty, address climate change and support Wales’ wider rural economy.
