The Religious Literacy Leadership Programme, a HEFCE-funded project, is delivering two free workshops in London (7 November) and Birmingham (8 November).

While there is a widespread public awareness of religion there is a limited public vocabulary for the constructive exploration of issues and opportunities that religion and belief can raise.

Being religiously literate means knowing what questions to ask, how to ask them and understanding why they are important. By realising how religion, as a given or a chosen identity, is lived in a variety of ways by many thousands of staff and students, we can improve the quality of the learning experience and enrich the daily life of universities and colleges.

These workshops for leaders, managers and academics will explore developing effective responses to religion and belief in higher education settings. There will also be opportunities to meet with counterparts in other institutions and in faith-related settings to exchange skills and learning, consider potential for partnership, and to network.

The workshops are intended to develop religious literacy in terms of:

• approaches to improving student experience
• widening participation and social mobility
• managing and fostering good campus relations
• promoting equalities and avoiding challenges
• engaging in robust relationships with strategic leaders and sector bodies
• helping HEIs lead a better quality of conversation and debate about religion in wider society.
