Standards for adult hearing services

A consultation on clinical standards for adult hearing rehabilitation services in Scotland was launched today.

The clinical standards are a global first for Scotland and aim to further improve audiology services for patients.

Minister for Public Health Shona Robison said:

"I am delighted to see Scotland lead the way in establishing these clinical guidelines.

"I understand how vital it is for people to able to hear properly and how this can make a significant impact on their quality of life. Our recently announced 18 week treatment target and first independent Scotland-wide clinical audit, underpinned by these national clinical standards, will make a real difference to those patients.

"The Scottish Government is committed to ensuring top quality, modern audiology services and we plan to consult widely with the voluntary sector and other stakeholders to deliver on this."

During February 2008, public meetings will be held in Glasgow and Dundee to provide an opportunity to comment on the draft guidelines.

The proposed guidelines have been compiled via the Audiology Services Advisory Group in liaison with NHS QIS. The standards are titled: accessing the service; information provision and communication with individual patients; assessment; developing and implementing an individual management plan communication; support and collaborative working and professional competence.
