HEFCE provides £11 million to support workforce development

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) has provided Anglia Ruskin University and Harper Adams University College with a total of more than £11 million that will enable them to provide new services to businesses.

With HEFCE's support they are developing higher level work-based learning, training and continuing professional development (CPD) activities in a wide range of businesses including the land-based sector.

Anglia Ruskin University receives £5.6 million over three years to assist in the creation of the Higher Skills @ Work programme, a dedicated, specialist unit that will address the need for degree-level skills training for people in workplaces local to the university and nationwide.

Harper Adams University College receives £4 million to set up the Rural Employer Engagement Development Network (REEDNET), a scheme to provide CPD courses for employers in the land-based sector in collaboration with the Royal Agricultural College and the Landex group of specialist land-based colleges. Harper Adams also receives a further £1.4 million to help consolidate and improve the university's student support services to assist with the step-change required for the wider implementation of its employer engagement strategy and related growth plans.

Both universities will also receive further funding for student places co-funded by employers. This will enable 5,250 people to study on full or part-time courses (1,450 full-time equivalent (FTE)).
Professor David Eastwood, Chief Executive of HEFCE, said:

'We are committed to supporting universities in their increasingly successful endeavours to strengthen their links with employers. We will provide at least £105 million over the next three years to expand provision at a number of universities, leading to higher skills in the workforce.

'We are very pleased to support these schemes by Anglia Ruskin University, which has a proud tradition of working closely with business, and Harper Adams University College, which is growing its involvement with employers by providing valuable support to land-based industries.

'We believe this funding will enable these institutions to build on their achievements to the considerable benefit of employers and their staff as well as the wider economy and services.'

Professor Michael Thorne, Vice-Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University, said: 'We believe this award recognises our existing strong achievements, the high quality of our offering and our stated commitment to the support of businesses and other organisations in growing their people and their overall effectiveness.

'This initiative will be highly effective for employees in terms of personal career development and it will improve the overall performance of the businesses and the organisations they represent.'

Professor Brian Revell, Dean of External Liaison at Harper Adams University College, said: 'Harper Adams University College and the Royal Agricultural College have a long and well established track record in 'Third Stream' university-business training and continuing professional development in the agricultural, food and rural business sectors.

'The two colleges will collaborate in this exciting project to develop new opportunities for credit-rated courses for rural businesses and professions.'

1. The awards are part of HEFCE's employer engagement strategy http://www.hefce.ac.uk/econsoc/employer/strat/, which it has developed in response to government priorities for achieving a more highly skilled workforce following the Leitch Review of Skills. The Government requires a substantial increase in employer co-funded student places. There are currently 32 institutions delivering co-funded provision (and through partnership arrangements many more are involved). There are 30 other proposals under development.
