New online tools on right pathway to demonstrate value

LBRO, the regulatory delivery organisation, has developed two new tools to supplement its successful Outcomes and Impacts Toolkit which helps regulators demonstrate the value of their services.

The Toolkit is a step-by-step guide to the development of meaningful indicators to assess the impacts and outcomes of operations, drawing on visual representations called pathways.

Now LBRO has designed a new online tool to aid the quick and easy creation of these pathways. This helps users map the pathways which result from the logic modelling which is at the heart of the toolkit.

Users can build up the elements of their work which relate to longer-term outcomes and impacts and then link these with arrows using the sequence of dialogue boxes. The process is not time consuming, and users can save their finished pathways on computer as PDFs, or print them out as necessary.

Before applying this tool, LBRO recommends users stage a workshop with staff and external partners to develop the pathway and indicators relating to outcomes and impacts. To this end, LBRO has also published a guide for facilitators running such workshops which should help in the design and delivery of workshop sessions with staff and partners.

LBRO has also supported the training of regulators (staff from the Health and Safety Executive, Food Standards Agency and local authorities) to build local capacity to make use of this important tool.

LBRO Chairman Clive Grace said: "The Outcomes and Impacts Toolkit has been used by many regulators and we intend these additional tools to provide more help for regulators, and others, as they seek to apportion resources more efficiently."
