Minister sees how Welsh Assembly Government money is bringing Post Office into 21st century.

Social Justice Minister Carl Sargeant today visited Llanishen Post Office to see how money from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Post Office Diversification Fund (PODF) has helped to bring the post office into the 21st century.

The PODF is a £4.5 million, three year scheme that is open to every sub post office in Wales. It aims to help with business and marketing advice, advertising, training and some set-up costs for new services. Funding can also be applied for improvements such as creating better access to buildings, upgrading computer equipment, improving security or providing better signs for the outside of premises. Sub-postmasters and mistresses can apply for up to £20,000 capital funding and up to £15,000 revenue support.

Llanishen post office was awarded PODF money by the Welsh Assembly Government last July to develop a cyber café and refurbish the building. The cyber café has six state of the art computers and two colour printers, which can also be used as photocopiers and scanners, as well as a broadband wireless network for people to use their own laptops. The post office also offers training sessions for those who are less familiar with IT so that the whole community can benefit from the new facilities.

Mr Sargeant said:

“The work that has been undertaken here is an excellent example of what we are trying to achieve with the PODF scheme. The money we have provided has not only helped to secure the long term future of the post office, but it has provided the community with a valuable resource.

The Welsh Assembly Government is committed to bridging the digital divide by helping people to engage with new technology and we are pleased to work with organisations like the Post Office to do this. This cyber café project will contribute to ensuring that the people of Llanishen are digitally included by making it easier for people who don’t have access to the internet at home to get online.
