‘Enterprise Troopers’ set to storm Wales’ primary schools

A team of new ‘superheroes’ is set to sweep the nation’s primary schools as a Welsh Government campaign aimed at nurturing entrepreneurship in younger learners gets underway.

Four newly created  characters known as the ‘Enterprise Troopers’ are on a mission to inspire five to 11 year olds and support schools in their development of entrepreneurial skills.

Enterprise Troopers ‘Amy’, ‘Callum’, ‘Rhian’ and ‘Owain’ made their debut at the launch of the competition in Pontlliw Primary School in Swansea. The characters have been designed as a fun and engaging way for youngsters to learn more about four key attributes of entrepreneurship – summed up by the acronym ACRO – Attitude, Creativity, Relationships and Organisation.

The initiative, based around a challenging enterprise competition for the youngsters over the coming months, was launched yesterday (May 22nd) in Swansea by Economy Minister Edwina Hart.

It complements an extensive Welsh Government programmed currently underway in secondary schools to implant the idea of entrepreneurship among teenage learners, and aims to recognise the commitment primary schools are already making to develop entrepreneurial skills.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister said:

"If we are to create a strong enterprise culture in the next generation, we need to plant the seeds at primary school level and then continue to build on that as children and young people go through their education."

The Minister challenged learners to set up school-based enterprises over the coming months that will show the four key attributes of enterprise and to link with local businesses to support their activities.

As part of the Youth Entrepreneurship Strategy, and implemented through the Big Ideas Wales campaign, Enterprise Troopers have been developed following consultation with primary school children, teachers and stakeholders who provided guidance on format.
