NHS Confederation - Health service is driving change but needs support, survey finds

Unprecedented challenges facing health and care services have compelled leaders to action, but there is anxiety across the system about whether it is fully equipped to deliver the level of change required, an NHS Confederation survey has revealed.

According to the NHS Confederation’s latest member survey, healthcare leaders remain concerned about growing pressures on the system, identifying the effects of an ageing population, increase in long-term conditions, potential future budget cuts, current funding issues and outdated or inappropriate service or workforce models as the main challenges facing the health service.

Significant and wide-spread changes

But the results revealed strong consensus among leaders on the need for – and commitment to – change, and the significant consequences for the NHS and patients of failing to do so, including an impact on access and quality of care.

More than half of the survey’s 547 respondents said the NHS needs significant and wide-spread changes to the way it currently operates and provides services to maintain current levels of care.

Changes underway

The survey shows that 97 per cent of respondents are either already implementing or planning to make changes within their organisations and across their local health economies.

However there is anxiety about whether the service is fully equipped to deliver the level of change required, with 70 per cent not confident in their local health economy’s ability to achieve it.
