Denham announces new Chairman of the Student Loans Company
Universities Secretary John Denham today announced the appointment of John Goodfellow as the new Chairman of the Student Loans Company (SLC).
Mr Goodfellow will take up his three-year appointment as non-executive Chairman of the SLC on 17 December 2008, replacing current Chairman Keith Bedell-Pearce who is retiring.
Mr Denham said:
"John Goodfellow's appointment will bring extensive experience of the financial services industry to the Student Loans Company (SLC). The SLC ensures that students can benefit from Higher Education (HE) and will continue to play a vital role in the challenge to increase participation in HE. John's experience will help the organisation face the future with confidence.
"I would also like to thank Keith Bedell-Pearce, whose expertise has helped steer the SLC successfully through the last seven years."
The appointment is made jointly with Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning in the Scottish Government.
Notes for Editors
1. The SLC was established in 1990 to administer the financial support made available by the Government to higher education students. It is both a Company limited by shares and a Non-Departmental Public Body: the shares are held by the Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills and by Scottish Ministers.
2. The SLC board has six non-executive directors and a non-executive chairman, appointed by Ministers. Keith Bedell-Pearce, the retiring Chairman, has served two terms of three years each plus an additional term of one year.
3. John Goodfellow has been Chief Executive of the Skipton Building Society since 1991, and is due to retire from that post at the end of 2008. He was Chairman of the Building Societies Association in 2003 and again in 2008. Until 2008 he was Chair of Business Link for York and North Yorkshire.
