International HIV/Aids awareness gains BIG funding support

Three international development organisations carrying out research into HIV/AIDS awareness in disadvantaged countries are today receiving over £28,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.

The grants are part of a total of five projects that are benefiting from today’s £46,310 global cash package from BIG’s £72 million International Grants programme.

Sir Clive Booth, Chair of the Big Lottery Fund said: "Today’s awards will be supporting the work of small UK-based organisations committed to helping disadvantaged communities overseas. These grants will help those groups to carry out the necessary research and analysis to develop their project planning and future funding bids. This will help to ensure that their work continues to bring long-term improvements to the lives of some of the most in need people in the world.

The Centre For Women's Career Development and Success (CWCDS UK), based in London, has received £9,935 to research the current barriers and issues that prevent access to health care for women in the Republic of Congo, and help them to better understand the current services available. Particular focus will be on methods of HIV/AIDS prevention women use, their knowledge and understanding of STI's and HIV, and the medical support available. Once the research has been completed the group will build a community health centre providing services such as advice, support, counselling, family planning and sexual health education.

The British Francophone Migrant Community Development (BFMCD), based in Bristol, has received £10,000 to research the effects of sexual and gender based violence in the Eastern and Central provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The BFMCD will carry out consultations and workshops with female victims of sexual assaults to assess current health service levels and their understanding of the rights available to them. Together with other humanitarian groups, the BFMCD will use the information collected to plan and coordinate interventions to prevent and respond to the current levels of sexual violence.

Tigray Development Association in the UK (TDA UK), based in London, will carry out a feasibility study in conjunction with their key partner, TDA International, in order to identify the barriers and issues relating to health services and support for people affected by HIV/AIDS in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. With their £8,840 grant, TDA UK will conduct a community-based assessment of the communities affected by HIV/AIDS aswell as the current organisations and the service-providers working in this area.
