The CBI commented on the introduction of a new core maths qualification, by the Department for Education, to encourage more pupils to study the subject from the age of 16 to 18.

Neil Carberry, CBI Director for Employment and Skills, said:

“With one in three employers reporting concerns about the numeracy of people entering the jobs market, getting more young people to study maths after the age of sixteen will make a real difference.

“A level maths doesn't suit everyone but our long-term goal must remain the study of maths to 18 for all young people.  

“To ensure its success, the new qualification must gain support and recognition from employers and we look forward to working with the Government to help make this happen.”
