The CBI responded to the Ministry of Justice’s surprise decision to close off competition for the running of four prisons.

Matthew Fell, CBI Director for Competitive Markets, said:

“The decision to close off competition for some prisons is really disappointing. Opening these services up to the scrutiny of competition delivers better quality and value for the taxpayer.

“While today’s announcement to open up facilities management and rehabilitation services is a welcome one, the default decision to run four prisons in-house raises broader questions about the Government’s overall commitment to open public services.”
