NHS Confederation - Quality assurance arrangements in pathology services go under the microscope
An NHS Confederation roundtable on 22 November will explore quality assurance processes at trust level, as part of an NHS England review of quality assurance in pathology services.
Investigation
NHS medical director Sir Bruce Keogh announced the review in December 2012, following issues raised at Kings Mill Hospital in October concerning pathology services.
A report into the issues was published by the Royal College of Pathologists in March 2013, as part of a Care Quality Commission investigation which reported the following month.
Identifying improvements
The Confederation is working with NHS England to build a picture of assurance procedures at trust level, and identify where improvements can be made.
Chaired by Dr Ian Barnes, former national clinical director for pathology, the review will bring together experts to explore how quality assurance arrangements can be strengthened and how organisations can be more confident about monitoring the quality of care they offer the public.
