Age UK - Help change supermarket pricing law

Age UK is backing the Which? 'Price it right' campaign to make it easier to compare prices in the supermarket.

Life is demanding. Our pockets are feeling the pinch and sometimes we just need simple changes to make things easier.

Food prices are a big concern for all of us. We believe it should be straightforward for shoppers to compare the price of food based on the amount they want to buy.

The unit price is the price of a food in a consistent measure, such as per litre or Kg. At the moment, it's harder than it should be for shoppers to make informed choices because this information isn't always available.

For example, is a 600g jar of mayonnaise for £3.49 better value than a 400g jar for £2.50? With clear unit pricing the answer would be obvious.

That’s why we’re supporting Jo Swinson MP and Which? to call on the Government to make sure that supermarkets have clear, consistent food unit pricing.

Consumer Information Bill

In November, Jo Swinson MP’s Consumer Information Bill will be presented to Parliament calling for better unit pricing. This will help shoppers identify the real bargains and save money on their weekly shop.

We need to show the Government that this matters to us, to help the Bill through to the next stage.

How to get involved

If you see poor examples of unit pricing next time you are shopping in a supermarket you can tweet them to @whichaction using #priceitright with the name of the supermarket, or else, you can sign up to the pledge on the Which? website

The more people who sign the more likely it is that the Government will sit up and take note that this matters to people and agree to make the Bill a law.
