EU regulation must always sow the seeds of growth - CBI

The CBI commented on the Government’s Business Taskforce report on EU regulation.

Katja Hall, CBI Chief Policy Director, said:

“EU rules have to sow the seeds of growth and keep Europe competitive. The Taskforce has made significant strides to pinpoint areas of concern for business and now the Government must champion this cause with other member states.

“We don't want a situation where smaller firms are saddled with poorly thought-out EU regulations which impede their ability to grow. British businesses need a level-playing field so all rules must apply evenly across the EU.

“Any European reform agenda must focus on how best to create growth and jobs.”

A recent CBI/YouGov survey found that when asked to rank their priorities for reform:

  • 46% of firms wanted an end to ‘gold-plating’ of EU legislation
  • 39% wanted EU rules applied evenly across all member states
  • 39% also wanted a reduction in regulation
  • 36% wanted to see structural reforms for a more competitive EU.
