The National School of Government and the University of Warwick are inviting applications for a funded ESRC CASE PhD studentship concerned with the development of national political leadership in the , and are keen to hear from those who have recently completed Masters degrees and from public service managers or trainers wishing to take a career break.

Part of a wider strategic collaboration between the Institute of Governance and Public Management at Warwick and the National School, ‘Developing National Political Leadership: Capabilities, Contexts and Challenges’ will involve a ‘mapping’ of the kinds of leadership development interventions and experiences considered valuable as perceived by politicians and other informed commentators, and as shown in relevant data.

National School Principal and Chief Executive Robin Ryde explained: “The aim of the project is to critically analyse existing approaches to political leadership development and contribute to a wider understanding. In particular, we want to know more about leadership capability and how it is developed, the outcomes of interventions, and differences in development need according to parliamentary role.”

The successful candidate will join Warwick Business School with their work supervised by Professor Jean Hartley at the University of Warwick, and benefit from a close link with the Ministerial Programme team at the National School.

Applicants should have an upper second-class degree or better, and a relevant Masters degree or equivalent experience. The award - available only to and other EU nationals - covers fees and an annual stipend of £14,900, plus a further £2,000 from the National School.
