An Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigation is underway in to previous police contact by Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) officers and a 29-year-old woman before her death.

Aamena Hussain, also known as Jyoti Puaar, was found at an address in Grove Green Road, Leytonstone, on Tuesday, 3 September. The MPS referred the matter to the IPCC as it became apparent that officers had contact with Ms Hussain in the days leading up to her death.

On Sunday, 1 September, MPS officers responded to reports of an assault in Leytonstone Road, near Maryland Train station, and arrested a 33-year-old man. The man was released on bail the following evening (2 September). In the early hours of Tuesday morning MPS officers were called to an address where they found Ms Hussain, the alleged victim of the assault, who was pronounced dead at the scene. IPCC investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding police contact with Ms Hussain and the man arrested on suspicion of assault on 1 September. The investigation is also looking at the actions and decisions of officers in relation to the man’s detention and subsequent bail on 2 September. Investigators are also probing whether there was any previous police contact with Ms Hussain which may have informed the decision making process regarding the assault on 1 September.

IPCC Commissioner Jennifer Izekor said:

“At this terribly difficult time my thoughts and sympathies go out to all those who knew Aamena, who was known to her family as Jyoti, as they come to terms with her untimely death.

"We will conduct a thorough and robust independent investigation into the contact police had with Ms Hussain in the days leading up to her death to ensure that all was done to respond to any risks to her safety which may have been identified.

“Both myself and our lead investigator have met with family members to explain why we are involved and outline our investigation to them. We also continue to keep them informed as the investigation progresses.”

A criminal investigation is ongoing and a 33-year-old man has been released on police bail.
