Lithuania to negotiate the Radio equipment directive
The Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER I) mandated the Lithuanian EU Council Presidency to enter into informal trilogues’ negotiations with European Parliament and the Commission on the Proposal for a Directive on the harmonisation of the laws of the Member States relating to the making available on the market of radio equipment, with a view to exploring the possibility of a first reading agreement. The adoption of the Proposal will amend the Directive 1999/5/EC on radio equipment and telecommunications terminal equipment and the mutual recognition of their conformity.
According to the Chair of the Committee ambassador Arūnas Vinčiūnas, the main purpose is to bring more clarity and reduce unnecessary burden on market players and to improve the level of radio equipment compliance with the established requirements.
“This legislation is equally important to the undertakings operating in the European Union which import or distribute radio equipment, as well as to manufacturers and end-users of such equipment, and institutions responsible for the supervision of radio equipment market”, - said ambassador A. Vinčiūnas.
The first informal trilogue is scheduled for 27th November.
The proposal for the Directive on radio equipment has been presented to the European Parliament and to the Council on 23 October 2012. The Council started examination of this dossier under the Irish Presidency in January 2013, and continued under the Lithuanian Presidency.
The IMCO Committee of the European Parliament voted its report on 26 September 2013, adopting 98 amendments to the text of the Commission proposal.
