Principal teachers hold key role
Principal teachers are being encouraged to help drive Curriculum for Excellence forward in their schools.
Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning Keith Brown, speaking in Stirling at the Association for Headteachers and Deputes conference for principal teachers, said the experience and skills of principal teachers could help make sure their school is making the most of the opportunities offered by the Curriculum for Excellence.
Mr Brown said:
"Curriculum for Excellence is about bringing real life into schools and taking lessons beyond the classroom. It is about raising the bar for everyone as well as reaching out and closing the gap for those who are left behind at present.
"A very important part of making this happen is freeing teachers to teach and make the most of their skills. It's about making sure every teacher is leading learning in their own classroom.
"That's why I believe principal teachers have a key role in driving Curriculum for Excellence forward in their schools. By supporting and encouraging their colleagues - whether through input into Continuing Professional Development or perhaps highlighting best practice - they can make a real difference.
"By helping to drive up standards in learning and teaching and increasing focus on learning within the wider community, principal teachers are at the sharp end of delivering for Curriculum for Excellence.
"I would also like to reiterate that any delay to full implementation of Curriculum for Excellence will only be considered if the Education Secretary is advised to do so by the Management Board - this does not mean we should stop preparing.
"Curriculum for Excellence is the right way forward and by continuing to work towards it's goals, teachers can help make sure every pupil receives the education they need to give them the skills for learning, life and work."
