Drive to get 900,000 adults using the web

People across Wales are being asked their views on how to encourage more people to use the internet.

The move is part of the consultation for the Welsh Assembly Government’s Digital Inclusion Framework which aims to help people gain the skills and confidence to get online.

Speaking at the launch of the consultation in Anglesey, Social Justice Minister Carl Sargeant called on private, public and third sector organisations, as well the general public, to get involved in the consultation process.

“Many people avoid going online as they don’t think they have the skills, know how or money to use the internet properly” said the Minister. “The framework aims to recognise the difficulties people face in using the web and suggest ways of overcoming these. We need people from across Wales to tell us their thoughts on what we are proposing so that the framework gets it right.”

Older people, the unemployed, disabled people and the economically inactive are the most likely to make up the 900,000 adults in Wales who never use the internet. With the internet playing such a huge role in everyday life, the Minister stressed the importance of ensuring that everyone is able to get online if they wish.

“People use the internet for all kinds of day to day things, like shopping, booking holidays and keeping in touch with family and friends” added the Minister. “Many employers also require staff to be IT literate, so it’s important that everyone can use the web. As the internet advances, I want to ensure that everyone can make the internet part of their everyday life.”
