LIGHT LONDON – INSPIRING CREATIVE APPROACHES

Light London launched today with an invited Visioning Forum timed to coincide with the period of winter lighting commissions and festivals in the UK and abroad.

Light London is a city-wide initiative, developed by Art in the Open and the London Development Agency’s Design for London, asking how creative lighting can transform London’s public realm. Focused on the artistic potential of light, it will look at how London can break new ground in this area.

Light London aims to both inspire new lighting initiatives and will consider how sustainable and innovative schemes can be realised across the capital. Unusually it brings together a mix of artists, architects, designers, local authorities and others involved in London’s public realm to initiate a city-wide conversation.

As a partnership between Art in the Open and the London Development Agency, Light London will develop key principles and engage with some of London’s key development projects. Light London will debate how lighting can be more meaningful and relevant to our public spaces, animating rather than simply illuminating them.

The London Development Agency will publish the outcomes from the Forum in December and the programme will continue over the next four months, finishing in spring 2009 with an evening event and the launch of creative principles.

Additional resources will include research and guidance and will be published via the Art in the Open website.

Notes for editors

The London Development Agency aims to improve the quality of life for all Londoners - working to create jobs, develop skills and promote economic growth.

Design for London is part of the LDA and its role is to ensure that London’s development takes place within the context of an overall strategic vision, and to offer support and design advice to those who are working to transform London into a world-class 21st century city.

There are many high profile long-term lighting schemes in other major cities (such as Turin, Lyon, Glasgow) involving creative approaches by artists, architects and designers. Lighting in London is often considered through street lighting and the lighting of individual buildings but not often across consistent areas of the cityscape and in particular permanently animating the public realm.
