Annual report shows how Wales is embracing sustainable development
Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, John Griffiths, has welcomed publication of this year’s Sustainable Development Annual Report 2011 – 12. The report explains how the Welsh Government promoted sustainable development in its work during the past 12 months. It includes updates from across the Government, on how every portfolio is applying sustainable principles in its work.
Highlights from the report include:
- Valleys Regional Park – involving over 40 organisations from different sectors and areas in driving economic and social regeneration
- Supporting 700 participants and involving 200 businesses from a range of different areas in developing low carbon skills through the Sector Priorities Fund
- Investment by Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) into innovative projects such as the Delta Stream and Sustainable Building Envelope Demonstration, generating new technologies, improving skills and lessening carbon emissions.
- Giving greater access to the arts for young people, disadvantaged groups and communities
- How Wales has become the leading devolved UK nation for recycling waste.
- Launch of Energy Wales: A low carbon transition – creating the framework that will allow Wales to become a low carbon economy
- Progress of the 21st Century Schools Programme. Greenhill Primary School, in Caerphilly became the first school in Wales to achieve an Energy Performance Rating of A+ and won the ‘Low/Zero Carbon Award’ at the annual ‘Constructing Excellence in Wales 2011’ awards
- Multi million pound investments in flood and coastal management investment aimed at protecting communities vulnerable to river and tidal flooding. Not only safeguarding homes and businesses, but creating construction sector jobs in the process.
The Minister said:
“This year’s report shows how the Welsh Government is using sustainable development as its central organising principle. It is clear to me that considering the economic, social, environmental and long term implications of everything we do is already benefiting people and communities in Wales.
“The Welsh Government recognises that to continue making progress it must constantly strive for improvement.
“I will shortly publish a White Paper on our proposals for a Sustainable Development Bill to strengthen the framework for sustainable development in Wales.”
