Budget 2011: KPMG comments on creation of 50,000 new apprenticeship places

Commenting on the Government’s pledge to commit £180 million to create up to 50,000 additional apprenticeship places over the next four years, Craig Robinson, director in KPMG’s public sector advisory practice said:

“This continued commitment from the government to increase the number of apprenticeships, ensuring that people have the right breadth of skills they need for the workplace, is extremely welcome news.

“It is also particularly encouraging that such a large proportion of the additional numbers - 40,000 of the 50,000 new places that are to be created - will be targeted at those who are currently out of work, as it is clearly this group that is most in need of government support.

“The good news is that it is readily apparent from the progress made since the last Budget that employers are already stepping up to the plate to get involved.

“However, there remains a challenge as to whether enough employers will continue to come forward, particularly given the amount of perceived bureaucracy that they have to go through to get involved.

“In addition, we hope that the government has learned from previous large-scale training programmes in recognising that it is essential that a similar level of effort goes into the quality of delivery. This is vital to ensure that the credibility of the apprenticeship brand is maintained, and that the people going through the programme get a high-quality learning experience.”

Bernard Brown, KPMG’s head of business services comments:

“What the Chancellor has really proposed today is a budget for more jobs and the future.”

“The Government has promised 40,000 new apprenticeships for the young unemployed, funding for 100,000 work experience placements. Coupled with the announced tax breaks and the planned investment into new green measures this could easily create 300,000 new jobs.
